How to Get Your Lawn Ready for the Spring

Wondering how to get your lawn ready for the spring? Here are a few of the most important things to do before we get too far into this beautiful season.

Prepare Your Lawn for Spring by Clearing it Off

The first thing to do is clear off any leaves or pine straw still leftover from the fall. Even though you probably already got most of it in the fall or winter, it’s a good idea to get off any stragglers.

There are a few reasons for this.

First, you’re making it easier for your grass to get the sunlight it will need to grow well.

Second, you’re reducing the waste of getting fertilizer or weed killer on this debris.

Third, it will just help your lawn look better.

Once you have the lawn cleared off, it’s time to move on to seeding.

How to Get Your Lawn Ready for the Spring

Plant Seeds in the Spring to Fill Patches

Over time, it’s common for your grass to die in certain areas. Maybe it didn’t get as much sunlight as it needed, or it died from getting scorched last summer. If your dog likes to always pee in the same spot, that constant stream of nitrogen isn’t good for the grass.

Start by loosening the earth 2-4 inches deep. Then rake the loose dirt back and replace it with a mixture of grass seed and compost or fertilizer. Use a tamper and then water as necessary.

While it can be tempting to skip this step, keep in mind that grass won’t magically grow in these spots unless you help it. Even though plants do spread and reproduce, we need to do our part to make sure it grows exactly where and when we want it to.

Add Mulch Around Shrubbery

Besides just looking nice, mulch keeps your bushes and shrubs healthy and prepares them for the hot weather coming. It helps retain moisture but prevents the dirt and roots from getting too hot as well.

Mulch is also great for helping keep weed growth down. Depending on the amount of shade in the area, you may not even need to spray for weeds. The mulch + shade will be enough to keep weeds from growing in many cases.

Aerate Your Lawn at Least Once a Year

Aerating your lawn makes it easier for water and oxygen to reach your grassroots. A basic concept is a machine rolls around your yard punching small holes in the dirt. These small holes are what make it easier for your grass to get what it needs to be healthy.

The spring is a great time to do it to help your grass grow strong before the weather gets too hot.

Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade

Some people never sharpen their mower blades, which can lead to problems down the road. Your lawn needs to be cut, not ripped out. By keeping the blade sharp, you allow it to cut the grass more easily and keep it healthy all season long.

Fertilize

Last but not least, it’s time to fertilize the lawn. You don’t need to fertilize it until after your first mowing, but now’s a good time to add the nutrients your grass needs to look beautiful all summer.
