Buy Materials in Bulk

It’s almost always less expensive per unit to buy in bulk versus in small increments. For example, you’ll save money if you buy 6 air filters instead of just 1. 

While it doesn’t always make sense to buy large quantities, sometimes it does. Here are a few things where you should at least consider buying in bulk instead of smaller quantities:

• Landscaping materials (i.e. mulch, rocks, bricks, etc.)
• Air filters (especially if you buy high-quality ones and replace them often)
• Wall paint (most projects need several gallons)
• Insulation for your attic or basement

Keep Your Materials and Tools Organized

We’ve all done it. You go out to the garage looking for a tool and just can’t find it. You take a trip to the store to get a new one, figuring maybe you lost the old one somewhere. A few days later you’re cleaning up the garage and find that tool you’d been looking for. 

This scenario happens to everyone and unfortunately leads to money and time wasted. Keep your tools organized so you can easily find what you’re looking for.

One way to save money on home maintenance is to deal with issues while they’re still small. Do you know there’s a leak in the roof? Fix it ASAP before a ton of rain gets in your attic causing mold. 

Got a leaky toilet in the upstairs bathroom? Fix it now, otherwise, it might cause a lot of water damage to the rest of the home. 

Is there an erosion issue on the side of your house? Don’t let the ground keep eroding, determine a solution such as a dry creek bed or French drain.

Get At Least 3 Quotes from Contractors

When you hire someone, don’t just go with the first person you hear from. Even if you’ve hired someone in the past, it’s a good idea to get multiple quotes. 

You don’t necessarily want to go with the cheapest one. Sometimes the cheapest is a low cost for a reason! But you will probably get several quotes in the same ballpark, and you can go with the cheapest one assuming they seemed knowledgeable.
