3 DIY Home Maintenance Tasks to Schedule Now

Some home maintenance tasks are best left to the professionals. But there are a lot of things you can do yourself to keep your home safe from damage and comfortable. Here are a few to put on your calendar right now.

Replace Your HVAC Air Filters

Keeping the air in your house free and clear of dust, debris, bacteria, and more is always a good thing. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that it’s the HVAC filters that help do that, so mark your calendar to replace them regularly. This is especially important if your home has people more vulnerable to respiratory issues than most, such as the elderly, children, or someone with asthma.

The frequency of how often you change the filters depends on 2 main things:

  1. If you have pets
  2. What kind of filter you use

If you have pets, plan on replacing your air filter every few months. They’re constantly shedding dander in your house and it’s your air filter’s job to help get it out of the air. If you don’t have pets, you may be able to just replace the air filter every 6 months.

There is a caveat to that though. The better your filter, the more often you need to change it. So if you buy the best HVAC filter available at your local DIY store, plan on replacing it every 1-2 months. That’s because these filters are so good that they clog up faster than others as it catches so many small specks of dust.

Clean Your Gutters

This is never a fun job, but it’s an important one if you have a lot of leaves and pine straw falling on your house.

If your gutters get clogged, they aren’t able to channel the water effectively. If they’re clogged too poorly and the gutter isn’t installed correctly, the water can even pool up over the gutters and towards your home. Since you never want water coming into your home from the outside, that’s a bad thing.

In the fall, you may need to clean your gutters twice- once after the leaves have been falling for a few weeks, then another time after they are all off the trees. It’s not a fun task, but it’s important to keep your gutters open and working correctly.

Caulk Windows and Doors

Every spring, take a few minutes to inspect the exterior caulk around your windows and doors. If you have some that are in rough shape, cut them off with a sharp knife and add some fresh caulk to them.

Caulk serves a few purposes:

  • It keeps bugs from finding their way into your home
  • It prevents water from getting in during a heavy rain
  • It insulates the home to keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in winter

It lasts for a long time but not forever, so add a caulk inspection time to your calendar.
